Kitgum, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Rev. Fr. Christopher Komakech, the Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish Kitgum has urged school administrators to prioritize the safety of students.
His call follows the death of Benita Hellen Lamwaka, a former student of YY Okot Memorial College, who was struck in the neck by a lawn mower blade in the school compound last week. The mowing machine was reportedly hired by the school.
Speaking during a requiem service held on Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Fr. Komakech emphasized the need for schools to ensure students’ safety while in school.
The mass was attended by hundreds of mourners including students, parents, local leaders, and teachers among others.
“Our children’s lives are precious. It’s our collective responsibility to protect them,” Fr. Komakech said. Adding “Schools must take concrete measures to prevent such tragedies.”
Last week’s incident sparked outrage and concerns about the safety of students in schools within Kitgum district.
Ongee Marino Lol, one of the parents noted that schools must prioritize student safety because the children’s lives depend on it.
Wany Oyok David, the chairperson Board of Governors YY Okot Memorial College however said the school has always guaranteed the safety of learners arguing that death was an isolated incident.
“We are deeply saddened by Benita’s passing. We will review our safety protocols,” said Oyok during the funeral service.
Kitgum District Education Officer Anthony Lam Lawot said that they are going to investigate the incident before taking action.
Since August, five learners in Kitgum, including two pupils of Pagen Primary School died in a road crash in Omiya anyima sub-county.
