Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Security has been heightened along the shores of Lake Albert in Bunyoro districts to avert cross border crime during the festive season.
The districts with heightened security include Buliisa, Hoima, Kikuube and Kagadi. They often experience a surge in attacks by suspected armed Congolese militiamen who use the porous border points.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says that the surveillance is aimed at averting any attacks by criminals who terrorize border communities more especially the suspected Congolese militia who have on several occasions attacked, robbed and killed Ugandans on the Lake Albert.
Hakiza says they have intensified both foot and water patrols that are being conducted by the police and the Uganda People’s Defense forces- UPDF.
Amos Asiimwe, the Buliisa Resident District Commissioner-RDC Buliisa has asked residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons to security personnel.

Charles Okumu, a resident of Butiaba landing site in Buliisa district calls for proper screening of all people entering the region from the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC coming to celebrate Christmas with their relatives in Uganda.
For the past two years suspected Congolese militiamen have attacked, killed and robbed fishing gear from Ugandan fishermen in Hoima, Kagadi, Kikuube and Buliisa districts. This has caused fear among the fishing community settling on the Lake Albert shores.
