Social media outrage as journalist dies after giving birth

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Former news anchor at the defunct WBS TV Nuliat Nambaziira died on May.04, days after giving birth. Nambaziira is said to have over bled after a Caesarian section delivery prompting doctors at the International Hospital Kampala to do a repeat surgery on her.

“My wife underwent three operations in a space of five days, I started losing hope at the second operation when a towel was inserted in her stomach and it had to be removed in two days”, her husband told mourners during the burial in Masaka.

This revelation caused outrage on social media especially among journalists where many questioned whether the country is on course to curb maternal mortality if people who have better access to hospitals die under unexplained circumstances.

One poster said government promotes birth in hospitals but lacks appropriate theatres for child birth and at times pregnant women develop complications that require specialist doctors who are not readily available.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) key indicators report for the sixth Demographic and Health Survey 2016, maternal mortality rate stands at 336 deaths per 100,000 live births. The most reported cause of death among women includes postpartum infections, bleeding and hypertensive disorders.
