Soroti, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | There’s a somber mood in Soroti magisterial area over the demise of the Chief Magistrate, Margret Aanyu.
Aanyu died in Kampala on Sunday where she was rushed after she was found unconscious in her home in Soroti on Friday. Aanyu, 54, was mother to the first son of the Nile Breweries Board chairman Onapito Ekomoloit.
She was transferred to Soroti in 2020 where she took care of three other Chief Magisterial areas before they were carved out of Soroti.
They are Kumi, Katakwi, and Kaberamaido, now fully fledged Chief Magistraterial areas.
A condolence book has been opened at the court premises. A vigil will be held at her home in Kampala on Wednesday, followed by Funeral Mass St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church Ntinda, at 9:00 am on Thursday; thereafter, Prayers at St Jude Catholic Church, Bukedea at 9:00 am on Friday, then Kasooka, Bukedea for burial on Saturday.
The news of her demise has paralyzed court business in Soroti’s magisterial area as staff and clients struggle to contain the shock.
Stella Aero, who expected a ruling on her three-year-long case of stolen cattle was left in shock when she learned that the Chief Magistrate had passed on. Aero says that she last communicated with the Chief Magistrate on Wednesday and that she had assured her of the ruling on Monday.
Patrick Okwakol, one of the Court Clerks, who was in office at the time of filing this story, says that they are rescheduling cases that were meant to be handled by the deceased Chief Magistrate Court. He told our reporter that the Chief Magistrate’s death has left all the staff in big shock.
