London, England | Xinhua | Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager until the end of the 2024 European Championships, the Football Association (FA) confirmed on Sunday.
Although Southgate has a contract until the end of that tournament, there had been speculation that he would step down after six years in charge after England lost the World Cup quarterfinal to France.
Speaking to the press afterwards, Southgate commented that he needed time to consider his future, adding that the previous 18 months had been “difficult.”
The FA’s Chief Executive Mark Bullingham reported that Southgate will now remain as coach, saying, “We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and [assistant coach] Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”
Southgate has been criticized at times for being over-conservative in his strategies and for sometimes being slow to react to events on the pitch, but he has built an exciting young team, with Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden all impressing in Qatar.
Former Paris Saint-Germain coaches Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino had been mooted as possible replacements, along with the two main English candidates, Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, who currently coach Newcastle United and Chelsea respectively.
