Speaker directs on school fees policy

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called for the establishment of a policy to harmonize school fees in Uganda.

During plenary on Tuesday, 07 March 2023, the Speaker expressed concern about the significant variations in school fees charged by different institutions leading to hardships for parents and students.

Among said that the current lack of regulation has resulted in schools setting their fees arbitrarily, leading to significant disparities across the education sector beyond what parents can afford.

She called for an urgent policy to harmonize school fees and promote access to education for all.

“The harmonization of school fees would create a level playing field and ensure that no student is denied access to education due to unaffordable fees,” she said.

The proposed policy, she said, would provide a clear framework for setting fees by considering factors such as access to education for low-income earners and children of peasants, among others.

“Government needs to come up with a policy on how we can make sure that the school fees are regulated and nobody should be able to charge high fees, it is exploitation,” she said.

The Speaker emphasized that the policy should be sensitive to the economic situation of parents and guardians and encourage transparency in the fees setting process.

That’s very good, Dear Madam Speaker. I am in 💯 % agreement with you. Uganda 🇺🇬 as a country still nags behind in the area of education structures and the like. Unlike other countries where schools are fully regulated by the Government, be it private or public government schools.

When it comes to the issue of school fees in Uganda parents and guardians are always left at mercies of the school owners which is not good at all.

The government of Uganda 🇺🇬 MUST take this matter seriously and ensure that school fees and other things are placed under full control of the central government and not leaving it to the hungry and greedy school owners.

One more thing is that of the free education for all Ugandans. Why are still there is no complete free education in Uganda??? I mean free from Kindergarten even to the University level???

There are so many countries in Africa now that have seen the real importance of free education to the citizens and Uganda 🇺🇬 too should come forward and eradicate illiteracy in the country at large. Not just a few selected ones.

    Blessings
