Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police crime intelligence and flying squad units have arrested key suspects in the killing of an ISO operative Hussein Mutyaba.
Mutyaba was shot dead by thugs on October 6 at Bulaga, along Kampala –Mityana highway when he tried to pursue them after robbing two mobile money operators Flavia Namutebi and Flavia Nankya.
Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, said intelligence teams successfully arrested the suspects from Ntungamo and Mbarara districts.
The suspects have been identified as Rodgers Karenzi, Fred Bahati and Brian Mbogo.
According to Enaga, the suspects have since confessed to have killed Mutyaba and Juliet Nankunda Nabasa a mobile money operator who was shot dead in August at Rubaga in Kampala.
Enanga said Mutyaba’s killers are part of the racket that has been terrorizing business people in Kampala and other areas.
Other than Nabasa and Mutyaba, police’s forensic and ballistic experts have connected the bullet casing picked at Rubaga and Bulaga to the September 24th robbery and murder of Nelson Turyasingura a mobile money operator in Ntungamo.
Enanga said what is puzzling police is that the suspects admit committing the crimes but they are not remorseful at all. Police said a special investigation is being conducted on what could be the other motives of the gangs since they don’t seem to be apologetic.
Other atrocities allegedly committed by the suspects include the September 11 robbery at Ruhara trading centre in Ntungamo.
Police said the gang further attacked a twins’ shop on September 16 at Ntungamo town and robbed unspecified amount of money from Kato and Kakuru.
Enanga praised the police teams that have netted down the criminals and vowed that police will continue cracking down all thugs wherever they are hiding.
Forensic and ballistic teams have also been credited for connecting bullet casing into the robbery and murder scenes committed in three different districts.
Police added that over 17 robberies are being investigated and are believed to have been committed by the group in this year alone. Detectives are now handling 17 counts of aggravated robbery and three counts of murder. At least two guns were recovered and have been used for ballistic analysis.
