Suspected smuggler shot dead in Busia

Busia, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Revenue Authority-URA enforcement officers have shot dead a suspected smuggler in Busia district. The deceased has been identified as Martin Wanjala, a 22-year-old resident of Buswiriri village, Kapyanga sub county.

Wanjala was reportedly shot dead on Sunday night while attempting to resist arrest at Bubango village along Busia-Jinja highway in Bulumbi sub county. He was accused of smuggling two cartons of baking flour from neighboring Kenya.

Ismael Wesonga, the LC3 chairperson Bulumbi sub-county says that the actions of the soldiers were uncalled for. He appealed to relevant authorities to intervene so that URA can avail justice to the family of the deceased.

Ian Rumanyika, the URA spokesperson condemned the act of the soldiers. He said that they will meet all the funeral expenses and ensure they avail justice.

Didas Byaruhanga, the Busia District Police Commander says that investigations into the incident have started.
