Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Achieving sustainable energy solutions in Uganda and beyond requires the adoption of the right technologies to industrial activities, household and other consumer segements needs, experts have said.
Speaking during the green sustainable energy industry and stable national grid conference held at Serena Hotel in Kampala on July 18, Huawei technologies and Uganda’s Ministry of Energy experts said sustainable energy solutions, technological advancements and the role of public-private partnerships in fostering sustainable development was critical.
Nick Lusson, the Huawei vice president of digital power for Eastern Africa Region highlighted the need for accelerated adoption of renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power, to address the country’s energy demands and environmental challenges.
One of the key issues he said, has to do with the importance of integrating advanced digital technologies to enhance energy efficiency and management.
Lusson emphasized the role of innovative solar products and digital power solutions in driving Uganda’s transition to clean energy.
He also underscored the need to adopt the use of high-end solar products to provide cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions for both urban and rural areas in Uganda.
The event stressed the need for capacity building and skills development in the energy sector. Training programs and support for the installation and maintenance of solar systems were highlighted as crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of renewable energy projects.
This focus on skill enhancement aims to prepare local communities and businesses to better manage and benefit from the new technologies being introduced.
Furthermore, the conference addressed the broader implications of digital transformation in the energy sector, including the adoption of ICT technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Big Data.
These technologies are seen as essential for driving efficiency and innovation in energy management and for supporting Uganda’s overall economic and social transformation according to Huawei experts.
Irene Bateebe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, emphasized Uganda’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
She highlighted the country’s ambitious goals, including increasing electricity access to 80% by 2025 and achieving universal access by 2030.
Bateebe stressed the importance of diversifying Uganda’s energy mix, with plans to incorporate 2,000 MW of nuclear power by 2040, alongside expanding solar and geothermal energy capabilities.
She said that working together with partners like Huawei would aid the government’s plans of achieving sustainable energy goals and lead to socio-economic transformation and overall development of the country.
