Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | Xinhua | Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Thursday called for the enactment of laws tailored to women’s empowerment, the presidency said in a statement.

“Tanzania needs laws that will ensure women’s full participation in economic activities and ownership of the country’s resources,” said President Hassan during the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF).

A statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communications said statistics showed that a huge percentage of women participated in economic development activities but some traditional norms did not provide space for the women to enjoy the fruits of the development.

“Enactment laws that will protect women against oppressive obstacles are long overdue,” she said in the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.

She said there was a need to review the laws and make them beneficial to the economic development of all citizens, said the statement.

According to the statement, the president reiterated the need to translate all the country’s laws into Kiswahili to enable citizens to understand them.
