Taxi operators want KCCA to register all drivers

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Taxi operators want Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA to soften the registration process and include all drivers that do not have taxis.

Last week, KCCA started registering all taxi drivers to get driving routes within the city. Each driver is supposed to provide a logbook or sales agreement of the taxi, National Identity Card of the owner, driving permit of the taxi driver and PSV license.

According to the registration guidelines, KCCA is registering one driver per taxi, a move that has attracted criticism from operators.

Khalid Tamusuza, a taxi operator from Mityana-Mubende stage in Nateete says a taxi is driven by more than two people who should also be registered.

John Sserwanga, a driver at Mukono stage in the New Taxi Park says KCCA should have asked stage managers to register all drivers at their stages and submit the names. He says that taxi operators without taxis have been locked out of the registration process.

Mustafa Mayambala, the chairman of Uganda Transport Development Agency says KCCA should register other taxi drivers immediately after registering drivers with taxis.

He is worried that those who have not been registered will be thrown out of the taxi business,which is their only source of income.

Registration of taxi drivers was supposed to close on 12th June but the Minister for Kampala Betty Amongi extended the exercise to the end of June.
