Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Hundreds of teachers convened at Covid-19 vaccination centres in Lira as the exercise kicked off on Monday.
The vaccination exercise which was supposed to start last week was delayed to enable the authorities to mobilize for the exercise.
Two schools; Lira Primary School and Ayago Primary School are being used as vaccination centres. The vaccination exercise is to ensure that all teachers are vaccinated as one of the conditions pre-set by the government for the reopening of schools.
On Monday, a total of 220 teachers received their first dose while 151 received their second dose.
Lameck Ayoo, a teacher of Omito Primary School in Lira city West division is excited that he was able to get his first jab after several attempts failed.
Some teachers who went for vaccination were irritated by the delays at the vaccination centres.
Dickson Odur, a lecturer at UTC Kichwamba in Fort Portal asked the government to expedite the acquisition of vaccines so that schools can reopen.
Jasper Abura, the Lira City Education Officer says they plan to vaccinate more than 5,000 people who include teachers and support staff. There are 4,000 teachers in Lira city.
Lira has received a total of 6,195 vaccines; 2,792 doses of AstraZeneca and 3,403 doses of Sinovac.
