Teachers to conduct remedial teaching, assessment when schools reopen

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Ministry of Education says that schools will conduct remedial teaching and assessment to determine the promotion of learners when schools reopen.

According to the ministry, all learners and semi candidates will first complete their respective class curriculum before they are promoted.

Dr Dennis Mugimba, the Education Ministry spokesperson says that they are redesigning the school calendar to enable learners undergo remedial studies for three months.

Mugimba explains that the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) is already in discussions for a smooth progression for all learners.

He further explains that the government is still focused on the phased reopening of learners who did not study when schools reopened. These include learners in P1, P2 and P3 and semi candidates who also have to register for their Uganda National Examination Board-UNEB exams.

Mugimba says that after all these interventions, the ministry will not be expecting to have double cohorts in a class as is being predicted by many.

President Yoweri Museveni announced that tertiary schools will reopen in November while other educational institutions will reopen in January in a phased manner.

However, President Museveni emphasized that this safe reopening will be possible only when the targeted groups of people including teachers, learners of 18 years of age and above, non-teaching staff and the other population are vaccinated
