Arua, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Theft has been identified as the leading offence committed in West Nile sub region over the past six months.
According to the police half-year crime report 2022, a total number of 902 theft cases were recorded in the region, contributing to 29.4 percent of all crimes registered from January to June this year.
The highest number of theft cases were recorded in Arua central district in Arua city with 221 cases, followed by Koboko district with 197 cases, Nebbi with 105 cases, Zombo district with 99 cases, Terego district with 77 cases, Arua district with 64 cases and Pakwach district with 62 cases.
Meanwhile, areas that recorded the least cases of theft over the past six months include Ayivu East division in Arua city with 12 cases, Madi Okollo district with 20 cases and Maracha district with 45 cases.
Josephine Angucia, the West Nile region police spokesperson says Arua central division registered the highest number of theft cases due to the high number of people who turn up for various services in the city center.
Angucia however says they have been carrying out intelligence-led operations in the city against the criminal groups that have been stealing the properties of the residents.
Police say theft cases in the region were mainly motivated by economic gains. Some of the commonly stolen items include motorcycles, mobile phones and animals.
In a recent interview, Jude Nasucha, the Arua District Police Commander told URN that their operations against criminal gangs in the city are yielding results and vowed to continue until sanity is restored.
Other general crimes among the leading crimes in the region came with 818 cases, followed by common assaults with 514 cases and sex-related offences which were 226.
The others are break-ins 156, economic crimes 137, child-related offences 107, narcotics and drug abuse 89, homicides 63, political and media crimes 05, among others.
