THIS WEEK: City Oilers set new record in Ugandan basketball

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The enduring success of the City Oilers basketball team has given the Ugandan sports fraternity a new dimension.

Last week, City Oilers won their sixth successive National Basketball League title when they defeated Betway Power 81-73 in game five of the finals. Fans have been blown away by the Oilers’ scintillating basketball and consistency since they were first crowned kings of local hoops in 2013.

They equaled Falcons’ record of six titles but no team has ever come close to Oilers’ six in a row, with Falcon only winning a hat trick of titles from 2002-2004.

City Oilers led by Captain Jimmy Enabu, have continued to beat opponents into submission season in season out. Coach Many Juruni and Oilers Chairman Mohammed Santur have been praised for their management style that has been a behind a rare success story in Ugandan sport.
