MP Amongin endorsed for the Pan African parliament job

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Ngora woman MP Jaqueline Amongin who received the 2017 Mandela Leadership Prize has been endorsed by parliament to run for the seat of Vice Chairperson of the Pan African parliament, the advisory legislative house to the African Union.

While the final polls happen on May 10 in Midrand, South Africa, Amongin has to first seek support of the other countries in the region – Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan, Tanzania and South Sudan to be presented as the candidate for the region since each of the five blocs that make up the parliament was to present a candidate. Amongin is not new to the parliament.

She was in 2013 elected the president of the youth caucus and also held a position of the chairperson of the Rural Economy, Agriculture and Natural Resources.

If handed the new responsibility, Amongin says her focus will be on mitigating effects of climate change, agriculture, trade and infrastructural development.
