Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Three boda boda riders are in custody at the Central Police Station in Kampala for their alleged involvement in an illegal assembly and pelting traffic officers with stones.
The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspects as Stephen Komakech and Byamukama. The third suspect, who hasn’t been named is also in custody at Jinja Road police station.
According to Owoyesigyire, the trouble for the trio started when a group of about 100 Boda boda riders blocked off Jinja, Kampala, Yusuf Luke, and Mukwano Roads in the Civil Parish of Kampala Central around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.
They subsequently started pelting stones at traffic officers who were managing the junction near Jinja Road traffic lights. This prompted police to swiftly intervene leading to the arrest of the three suspects.
“Upon investigations, the incident has been linked to a fatal accident that occurred earlier around 8:50 AM along 8th Street. The Kabalagala Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the accident, which involved a motorcycle bearing registration UFP 327T, ridden by the victim, Mr. Kimbowa Steven,” he said.
He explains that the motorcycle was hit by a Hino registration number UBG 834M belonging to the Homelkin company, a waste management firm. “The driver, identified as Atuhaire Emmy, initially left the scene but was subsequently apprehended by Kabalagala Police. Atuhaire has provided his statement regarding the events leading up to the accident,” he said.
He explained that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident. “We urge all parties involved to remain calm during this process. The deceased, Steven Kimbowa, has been transported to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination, and traffic flow in the affected areas has been normalized,” he said.
