Kabale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Three civil servants of Kabale district local government have committed to refunding 42.94 million Shillings. They are Vianney Besigomwe, Maziba sub-county Chief, James Magezi sub-county cashier, and Loyce Asiimwe District Clerk to Council.
The funds under the District Development Equalization Grant (DDEG) were released between financial years 2020/202 and 2023/2024 to rehabilitate roads in Maziba Sub County.
However, no works were done and the money was not on the sub-county bank account.
The roads are; Nyanja Trading Centre to Kiziba A-Kiziba B-Kabimbi-Bweyo Road, Ikona-Munkirp primary school road, Nyakasa-Kagona Road, Kaburasi-Rwemihanga-Kanoni road and Eiziniro-Mukashenyi-Birambo-Karweru road.
In a letter dated February 8, 2024, Besigwomwe, Magezi, and Asiimwe commit to refund the money in two months. The three also committed to ensuring that money serves the purpose of rehabilitating road works within the same months.
Godfrey Nyakahuma, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner said that if the accused fails to refund the money, the law will take its course.
The three were recently embroiled in another embezzlement and corruption scandal.
Last month, Besigwomwe and Magezi were arrested for swindling 17.18 million Shillings meant to rehabilitate roads in Maziba Sub County. They were also accused of swindling 8.95 million Shillings meant to rehabilitate Kyanamira sub-county council hall.
