Three knocked dead in Namutumba road accident

Namutumba, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Busoga East is investigating circumstances under which two passengers and a motorcyclist, were on Monday morning knocked dead in Magada trading center, Namutumba district along the Iganga-Mbale highway.

The deceased are; Joshua Wanga, a motorcyclist aged 18 years, Dennis Masongole, a passenger aged 18 years, and Florence Logose aged 47 years.

It is reported that the accident occurred at around 7:30am when the driver of a Toyota Passo bearing registration number UBH 182P, which was running from Iganga side rammed into a motorcycle of Bajaj model, registration number UFB 502J from the opposite direction.

The vehicle overturned several times causing the death of three people on the motorcycle. The driver whose identity is not yet known, fled the scene immediately. However, police has launched efforts to hunt him down.

The deceased have been taken to Nsinze health center IV mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Farouk Mudumba, a trader within the area says that both the driver and the motorcyclist were over speeding, which led to the head on collision, since they were driving in the same lane and there was no room for them to swerve off the road.

“With roadside traders and tracks alike occupying the side lanes of the highway during rush hours, the road becomes narrow and prone to serious accidents since road users from both directions struggle for the same lane with no room for adjustments,” he said.

Busoga East police spokesperson Diana Nandawula says that the vehicle has been impounded and on conducting a search in the same, eight empty bottles of beer were recovered from the driver’s seat, which raises suspicion that the fugitive was over speeding and driving under influence of alcohol.
