Cwinyaai, Sekibejja and Nsubuga ready for Africa Amateur Golf Championship

Johannesburg, South Africa | THE INDEPENDENT | Joseph Cwinyaai, Andrew Sekibejja and Godfrey Nsubuga will carry the Ugandan flag at the inaugural Africa Amateur Golf Championship that tees off February 21-24 at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa.

“I am looking forward to the tournament and rubbing shoulders and playing with Africa’s elite golfers,” Cwinyaai said, adding that “the experience is going to be important for all of us and we hope for the best.”

He is one of three senior amateurs that will take on an elite field of over 72 amateur golfers from Africa in this tournament organised by Royal and Ancient, golf’s world governing body.

All eyes will however be on Nsubuga, as he has had a stellar performance the previous season, winning the Uganda Open, Tanzania Open, Tea Fields Trophy together with the Nyali Open. He is pursuing a golf scholarship in the United States.

Sekibejja, winner of the 2022 Uganda Open, recently featuered in the Victoria Cup, where Uganda lost narrowly to Kenya at the Uganda Golf Club.

The Leopard Creek Country Club is set against the stunning backdrop of the Kruger national Park. The inaugural championship will provide a world-class platform for the region’s rising talent to compete against each other with golfers representing 24 African nations making up the field.

The winner will earn a spot into the 152nd Open at the Royal Troon, the Amateur Championship, the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Waterfall City tournament of Champions.

“The creation of the Africa Amateur Championship and Africa Amateur Women’s invitational reflects our commitment to fostering talent, creating a pathway for aspiring golfers and elevating the standard of amateur golf in the region,” said Phil Anderton, Chief Development Officer at Royal and Ancient.
