The oil company records 20 million man-hours without lost time incidents
Kampala, Uganda | JULIUS BUSINGE | TotalEnergies EP Uganda on September .12 achieved a significant safety milestone on the Tilenga project by completing 20 million man-hours without any Lost Time Incidents (LTI).
An LTI is defined as a workplace injury resulting in the loss of productive work time for over 24 hours, permanent disability, or death.
This achievement marks a substantial improvement in safety performance, coming 226 days after reaching the 10 million man-hour mark in January 2023. Safety experts consider this milestone a critical indicator of the company’s commitment to health and safety policies and procedures.
Philippe Groueix, the general manager of TotalEnergies EP Uganda, said the company’s dedication to safety is its core value. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a safety culture among the company’s 8,000 employees and contractors to identify and mitigate risks effectively in all operations.
Groueix stressed that safety is vital for the company’s sustainability, and achieving this milestone demonstrates their collective commitment to delivering the Tilenga project without accidents. He attributed this accomplishment to the organization’s culture, risk awareness, implementation of safety rules, leadership commitment, training, and the involvement of all employees and contractors.
Groueix underlined that the Tilenga project’s success is contingent on maintaining an injury-free workplace, emphasizing the importance of caring for each other and putting human life as a top priority.
Cyril Champigny, the Health, Safety, and Environment Director of TotalEnergies EP Uganda, praised the role of contractors in achieving this safety milestone.
He emphasized that the company’s health, safety, and environment strategy rely on strict compliance not only from their staff but also from contractors, ensuring community well-being.
Champigny noted that 94% of the man-hours were executed by contractors, reflecting a joint commitment to minimizing risks and enhancing safety performance on the Tilenga project.
Kenneth Findlay, the HSE Manager of McDermott, one of the project’s major contractors, emphasized their dedication to world-class safety performance. He highlighted the significance of instilling a strong safety legacy in Uganda through their work on the Tilenga project.
About the Tilenga Project
The Tilenga project is implemented by TotalEnergies EP Uganda on behalf of the Government of Uganda in the Albertine Region. The project will produce 230,000 barrels of oil at plateau from the 6 fields of Ngiri, Jobi Rii, Gunya, Mputa-Nzizi-Waraga, Kasemene-Wahrindi, Kigogole-Ngara, Nsoga, and Ngege fields.
Over 400 oil wells will be constructed on 31 well pads to produce oil and gas resources.
The first oil production is projected to start in 2025. TotalEnergies EP Uganda is committed to undertaking the Tilenga project in accordance with national regulations, the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the International Finance Corporation performance standards.
On the other hand, TotalEnergies EP Uganda is an upstream affiliate which is leading the development activities towards production in the Tilenga project area – Contract Area 1 (CA-1) and Licence Area 2 North (LA-2N) within the Albertine Region.
