Algiers, Algeria | AFP |  Algeria’s newly-elected President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Turkey’s foreign minister Tuesday, the official APS news agency reported, days after Ankara confirmed it was deploying troops to Libya.

The meeting between Tebboune and Mevlut Cavusoglu focused on Libya’s “escalating violence resulting from foreign interventions, which complicate the search for a political solution,” the Algerian presidency said.

The two parties agreed “to avoid any concrete action that could further muddy the waters and to make every effort to achieve a ceasefire” in Libya, the presidency’s statement added.

Fighters loyal to eastern Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive last April against Tripoli, the seat of a UN recognised Government of National Accord.

Ankara backs the GNA and on Sunday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his country’s military had begun deploying to Libya.

Cavusoglu arrived in Algeria’s capital on Monday and also met his counterpart Sabri Boukadoum.

On Monday, Tebboune received the head of the GNA Fayez al-Sarraj to discuss the heightened tensions in Libya.

Algeria on Monday reaffirmed its “absolute opposition to all foreign interference in Libya” and urged all parties to return to an inclusive national dialogue.

Britain, France, Germany and Italy on Tuesday jointly condemned Turkey for deploying troops to Libya.

Libya has been mired in chaos since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising that killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi.
