Bukwo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Bukwo district have arrested two men for attempting to murder a woman over a land wrangle in Kululu village, Aralam parish, Riwo sub county.
Aminis Kayondo, the Bukwo district police commander named the two suspects as Patrick Siwa, aged 58 and Micheal Kipsang, aged 43.
He said the suspects were arrested on Friday morning as they were heading with sharp pangas to the home of Eunice Chemutai, with an intention to kill her.
“The community made an alarm calling for rescue, luckily our police were quick to react and arrested the two before they could access the old woman,” he said.
Kayondo said the two will be charged with attempted murder.
Josycline Chemutai, a resident said the suspects were ready to commit a crime, adding that they were both drunk.
“They were ready to kill the old woman because they were drank and also they were moving with alcohol in their hands,” she said.
Eunice Chemutai told police that the suspects who are also her relatives have been pestering her to give them land her husband bought for her.
“They want me to give them my husband’s land so that they can sell it, which am not accepting, that’s why they want to kill me,” she said.
Samuel Hashaka Mpimbaza, the Bukwo Resident District Commissioner said the use of pangas for committing crimes in Bukwo is on the rise and urged police to intensify community policing.
“A lot is needed to be done in sensitizing the community in Bukwo to stop taking the law into their hands,” he said.
