Two held over teargas explosion in Church

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police are holding two people in connection to an explosion at Kyamugamba Catholic Church in Waragaza Trading center in Kikuube district. The suspects are John Byaruhanga and Derrick Atulinda, both residents of Rwebiseke village in Butoole parish Kyangwali Sub County.

The explosion occurred on Sunday at around 10:30am when the suspects sneaked with a teargas canister into the church. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, says two minors he only identifies as Ayebale and Taremwa were injured in the explosion.

The explosion, which occurred in the middle of the church service, caused a stampede as people fled for dear life. He says the minors sustained injuries on their fore head, hands Face legs and stomach.

They were rushed to Kituuti Health Centre where they are admitted. Hakiza says detectives from Wairagaza Police station immediately swung into action and picked up the suspects.

He says the suspects are being held on charges of attempted murder and being in possession of firearm.
