Butaleja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two people have died and eight others hospitalized after a church collapsed in Butaleja district.
Namulemu Catholic Church in Namulemu village in Butaleja town council collapsed on Wednesday afternoon after a heavy hailstorm.
A group of believers were hit by the wall of the church leaving two dead and eight of them nursing injuries.
Rosemary Wamailu, one of the leaders in the church who is also the district councillor for Butaleja town council identified one of the dead as 60-year-old Angela Malwa, a resident of Busasi village in Butaleja town council.
She said Malwa died on the spot after the wall collapsed on her while another unidentified woman died on the way to the hospital. The injured were rushed to Busolwe Hospital in critical condition.
An eye witness, Nicholas Nabihuli, a resident of Namulemu village said that the church collapsed because it was in a bad state for five years.
Alfred Walyuba, the LC I chairperson of Lumule village said that the church was poorly constructed.
“The church is too big but they only put six pillars instead of nine that could support it. This is why it was easily brought down by the storm,” he said.
