Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Aids Commission-UAC is to start streamlining the operations of Non-Governmental Organizations-NGOs dealing in HIV/Aids programs.
According to the UAC, although there are over 3,000 NGOs in the country providing HIV/Aids services, majority of them abandon the rural areas and concentrate in the urban centers.
The chairperson of the commission Eddie Mukooyo says many of the NGOs are also briefcase while others duplicate government work.
Mukooyo also says they are developing guidelines that will help them track funds given to the NGOs to ensure they reach the actual beneficiaries.
The Director-General Uganda Aids Commission Nelson Musoba says they are currently creating a database for the NGOs to find out the number, what services they provide and areas of operation among others.
The UAC board was on Friday meeting the speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga over the status of HIV in Uganda and its funding.
According to Musoba, the verification will also enable them to know which areas are adequately covered in terms of HIV services. He warned that organizations that will not heed to the decision to have them relocated for instance will not be certified.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga welcomed the move saying that several NGOs concentrate their operations in one area and don’t yield any progress.
