The Government of Uganda has endorsed the candidature of Patrick Masambu for election as Director General of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation (ITSO).

Masambu, a former head of the Uganda Communications Commision (UCC), is currently the Deputy Director General and Director of Technical Affairs at ITSO, a position he has held since May 2010.

UCC confirmed the government endorsement, saying “Masambu’s election bid is based on his significant contributions to ITSO top level decisions and related Satellite industry initiatives, coupled with his visionary leadership qualities, commitment and technical competence.”

The election, at the 37th ITSO Assembly of Parties meeting, is scheduled to take place in Washington DC, from October 12th – 14th, 2016.

The International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation is an intergovernmental organisation charged with overseeing the public service obligations of Intelsat. ITSO currently has 149 member countries including Uganda.  The Current Director General & CEO is Mr. Jose Manuel do Rosario Toscano from Portugal.

According to UCC, involvement with ITSO gives landlocked Uganda an opportunity to ensure that its needs and interests in the area of ICTs and satellite technology are properly addressed. ITSO infrastructure support is crucial in air navigation control, television broadcasting direct to homes and connectivity of rural sites, broadband data and international telecommunications connectivity.
