Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda is harboring a number of highly trained assassins with sophisticated techniques to execute high profile attacks, according to Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu, a former army commander and now president of the Alliance for National Transformation-ANT political party.

Muntu was speaking from Medipal International Hospital in Kampala after visiting former Works Minister and Army MP General Katumba Wamala, who survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday. Katumba was shot by unknown gunmen along Kisota road in the Bukoto-Kisaasi neighborhood, in an attack that left two people dead.

The deceased include Gen Katumba Wamala’s daughter, Brenda Nantongo and his driver Haruna Kayondo who succumbed to gunshots. Similar attacks have been recorded in the past, claiming the lives of prosecutor Joan Kagezi, Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Maj Muhammad Kiggundu, ASP Muhammad Kirumira, and several Muslim clerics.

According to Muntu, Ugandans who have served security forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia have acquired skills that are far better than the capacity of local security personnel, making them a threat to Uganda.

“This is worrying, we see more assassinations, and many attempts and the capability to investigate, get the criminals, try them, charge them by our security agencies is not seen anywhere. This is bad for this country. They are far better ahead of them in techniques,” said Muntu.

But Muntu warns the government to double its efforts to guarantee the safety and security of the citizens.

President Yoweri Museveni earlier said that security forces had a clue on the people who made an attempt on Gen Katumba’s life, adding that they will be brought to book. In previous addresses, Museveni has urged members of the public to be vigilant especially when they are being trailed by motorcyclists.
