Uganda Premier league set for kick-off, all players vaccinated

 

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPDNENT | All is set for the new Uganda Premier League season. The league is slated to kick off today.

Ahead of the new League, Decolus Kiiza, the FUFA Deputy CEO in charge of Football says that players have either received their first COVID-19 jab while others are fully vaccinated in a bid to limit the spread of the virus.

Kiiza also said that the Federation will allow only 200 fans in the stadium.

This year’s edition will kick off without SC Villa which was left out because it does not have a Chief Executive Officer, which is one of the basic licensing requirements. Kiiza said that the club will be included when they sort out their licensing.

The teams are in a buoyant mood ahead of the new season. The League will return to action after almost five months without any games being played due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Almost all the premier league clubs have boosted their squads ahead of the new season.

Vipers SC has signed two players in the transfer window, midfielder Bright Anukani and goalkeeper Jack Komakech. The team has also promoted players from the junior side including Ivan Ashaba Mutwalib Mugolofa and Emmanuel Munoobi.

KCCA FC has signed over 11 players including new Keeper Benjamin Ochan who replaced Charles Lukwago. Other new players include Defender Geoffrey Wasswa, Brian Majwega, and Innocent Wafula among other players.

Defending champions Express have also signed five new players including new custodian Joel Mutakubwa who replaces Mathias Muwanga. Other signings include defender Deus Bukenya, Midfielder Nicholas Kasozi, Forward Joseph Akandwanaho and Raymond Walugembe.

Wasswa Bbosa, Express FC Head coach says that the majority of his players are in good conditions for any challenge in the forthcoming league, he said they are looking forward to defending their title.

According to the opening fixtures defending champions, Express will start their title defence against newly-promoted Arua Hill FC at their Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Mbarara City will also host Solitlo Bright stars at Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara while Onduparaka will take on UPDF FC at Greenlight Stadium in Arua.
