Uganda prepares to host FIBA Zone V U-18 Championship

KAMPALA, Uganda | Xinhua | The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) is preparing to host the FIBA Zone V U-18 Championship slated for June 9-14.

Nasser Sserunjogi, President of FUBA, told Xinhua on Tuesday that they are making all necessary arrangements to make sure that the Championship is a success.

The Championship which brings together boys and girls teams from Zone V of the African continent will be played at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala.

“We are also preparing our teams to be in good shape because this is a platform for qualification for the FIBA U-18 African Championship. It is always good for us to host such big tournaments because it also gives us a lot of mileage as a country,” added Sserunjogi.

Uganda’s teams the Junior Silverbacks and Junior Gazelles will be hoping to also utilise home advantage to be able to qualify for the FIBA U-18 African Championship which they qualified twice in 2016 and 2018.

Dr. Patrick Ogwel, the General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), the body that governs sports in the country said that they are excited that a big basketball event will be hosted in Uganda.

“It is always good to host these international competitions because it shows that we have the capacity and we also keep improving our standards,” added Dr. Ogwel.

The 10 teams that have confirmed participation include Somalia, Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, Sudan and hosts Uganda. ■
