Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed that negotiations are on-going to resolve the tensions between Uganda and Rwanda.
In February Rwanda closed its main border with Uganda at Katuna to allow the completion of the one-stop border post in Kisoro district to purportedly expedite the construction of the single customs post at Gatuna.
However, Ugandan traders were advised to use the Kyanika and Kagitumba border posts to enter Rwanda. The Rwandan government advised its nationals against crossing to Uganda because they could not guarantee the safety of their nationals in the Ugandan territory.
Rwanda also accused Uganda of hosting and facilitating dissidents especially Rwanda National Congress-RNC and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda FDLR, which have declared war on the Kigali government.
On June 10, 2019, Rwanda Revenue Authority authorized a temporary opening the border to help carry out trials for heavy trucks movement on Gatuna [Katuna] One-Stop-Border Post up to 22nd June 2019 when the border was closed again up to date.
Addressing journalists at State lodge Makanga hill in Kabale district on Tuesday during two days’ visit in Kigezi Sub-region, Museveni confirmed that talks started early this month in Luanda-Angola, when he met the President of Rwanda, Paull Kagame together with Angolan President, João Lourenço and Democratic Republic of Congo’s Félix Tshisekedi.
Museveni says that members of the public should remain patient as negotiations continue. Museveni declined to reveal details of the negotiations.
On wealth creation, Museveni advised members of the public to focus on growing of apples, grapes and strawberry for commercial purposes in order to improve on their household income.
He also encouraged members of the public to get involved in fish farming and Zero grazing if they are to get rid of poverty.
On the recent transfer of Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaaju, Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner to Iganga district, which outraged Kabale residents, Museveni says that he is not aware of the transfer and promised to investigate the matter.
Before the press briefing, Museveni held a closed-door meeting with leaders from Kigezi sub-region at Kigezi College Butobere.
