Uganda to celebrate World Veterinary Day in Rakai

Rakai, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Week-long activities to mark World Veterinary Day (WVD) 2024 in Uganda climax today April 26 in Rakai with celebrations organised by the Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) in partnership with Ministry of Agriculture and Animal industry and fisheries (MAAIF), and the Food and Agriculture organisation FAO.

The  World Veterinary Association (WVA) announced that this year’s World Veterinary Day will celebrate veterinarians as essential workers in their communities. The official theme, “Veterinarians are essential health workers” honors veterinarians and all do to keep their communities safe and protected.

“This dimension of the veterinarians’ work often remains invisible to the society but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession,” the WVA said.

All graduated veterinarians, WVA said, have undergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible, for promoting public health and food safety and security.

Dr. Nabadda Sitenda Madrine Zzimbe, Vice President, Uganda Veterinary Association hailed  veterinarians and para-veterinarians for their unwavering dedication in a WVD message.

“Amidst the rapid expansion of the human population, the resurgence of diseases, heightened population mobility, and escalating competition for natural resources, veterinarians emerge as pivotal guardians of public health, diligently conducting disease surveillance, ensuring accurate diagnoses, and administering vital treatments,” she said.

The run up to the World Veterinary Day sees Vet Doctors offer a list of veterinary services. These inlcude veterinary training , farmer training , diagnosis, treatment , vaccinations, zoonotic disease control, animal products inspections , animal breeding, animal feeding, surveillance and policy formulations.
