Rebecca Cheptegei, Boy Friend Hospitalized After Petrol Attack
Nairobi, Kenya | THE INDEPENDENT | Ugandan marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei is battling for her life at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital following a domestic dispute that escalated into a petrol attack by her boyfriend Nickson Marangach. Marangach also got burnt in the attack and is also hospitalised.
Selesio Murithi, the Uasin Gishu County Deputy Commander, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway. According to a report filed by Rose Chebet, the Kinyoro Area Chief, the attack occurred on Sunday at around 2 p.m.
Marangach allegedly entered Cheptegei’s compound armed with petrol, poured it on her, and ignited it. The flames also backfired onto him, as his clothes were also soaked in petrol. A close relative of Cheptegei, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the athlete had been dealing with family conflicts with Marangach following her return from the Paris Olympics.
These conflicts led to a partial separation, and efforts were underway by the families to reconcile. Cheptegei participated in the Women’s Marathon at the recent Paris Olympics, where she finished in 44th in 2:32:14.
