Uganda’s core inflation up due to rise in tilapia fish, soap, chicken prices

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Headline inflation for June 2024 of 3.9 percent compared to the 3.6 percent registered in the year ended May 2024.

The high inflation has resulted into the increase in prices of tilapia fish, dry soap, and chicken according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) consumer price index (CPI) report for the last 12 months ending June 2024.

Prices of fresh tilapia increased to 8.7 percent in June 2024 compared to 3.8 percent in May 2024. Chicken prices increased by 9.1 percent in June compared to 4.6 percent registered in May 2024 and laundry soap prices registered an increase of minus 4.6 percent compared to minus 7.6 percent registered in May 2024.

Edgar Mfite Niyimpa the principal Statistician prices while reading the report on Friday highlighted that the increase in inflation was mainly driven by core inflation which increased to 3.8 compared to 3.7 percent registered in May.

According to Niyimba, the report showed an increase in the annual energy, fuel, and utilities inflation of 10.3 percent in June compared to last month’s 9.5 percent. He adds the increase in this category was brought about by an increase in firewood prices which rose to 23.7 percent in June this year from 13.8 percent registered last month.

In the same category, petrol prices increased to 9.0 percent this month from 8.1 percent the previous month and diesel prices also increased by 2.0 percent in June this year compared to 1.1 percent registered last month of 2024.

On the other hand, the monthly inflation showed a decrease in the food crops and related items by 2.5 percent in June this year from the 1.2 percent drop recorded the previous month. The decrease was significant with low prices of cooking bananas which went down 14.5 percent in June this year from a 13.1 percent drop recorded last month. The prices of tomatoes also decreased by 6.7 percent in June this year from an 11.2 percent rise recorded in May 2024.

The geographical annual inflation showed Kampala with a high inflation rate of 5.2 percent registered in June 2023 compared to 4.6 percent registered in May this year.

This was triggered by the food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation that increased from 1.3 percent to minus 0.4 registered the previous month. Jinja took the second lead with an increase in inflation of 5.1 percent registered in June 2024 compared to 4.7 registered in May this year because of the annual furnishing of households’ equipment and routine household maintenance that increased to 4.1 percent registered in June 2024 compared to 2.2 percent registered in May the same year.

The last annual inflation was registered in Mbale Center at 1.8 percent for the year ending June 2024 compared to 2.7 percent recorded last month the same year.

According to the UBOS Report, this was due to annual food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation that registered 2.2 percent in June compared to 9.8 percent registered in May 2024.
