Uganda’s U-20 athletics team report home with silver, 2 bronze medals

Kenneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop secured bronze medals in Peru

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Team Uganda for the 2024 World Junior Athletics Championships has secured three medals for the country. The team that was staged in Lima, Peru from 27th to 31st August 2024, triumphantly came home, with one silver medal from the newly recognized talent in 3000meter steeplechase (Girls) Loyce Chekwemoi and Charity Cherop with Kenneth Kiprop who shiningly exposed Uganda’s flag to the Bronze podium finish in 5000meters categories respectively

Dominic Otuchet, the president of the Uganda Athletics Federation expressed gratitude, that the spirited Ugandan performance at the event exposed the country to thousands of fans and Uganda as a country, including international managers who are interested in supporting the golden sport.

“It’s with honor that, the young boys and girls have proven their potential that they fit in the shoes of victory at any international event,” said Otuchet. He explains that, nevertheless, even without a Gold medal at the just concluded recognized rise curtain event, the achievement represents Uganda’s highest enthusiasm for sports, both at home and at the international level.

Joshua Cheptegei, the reigning 1000-meter Olympic gold medalist complements that, the young talent has exhibited their potential and is yet to demystify that, track running in Uganda is not embedded in one or two individuals. “Every sportsman and athletic supporter can now understand that athletics especially track running is not abought Cheptegei, but rather believing that in sports we can make ends meet,” Cheptegei noted.

Hosea Chemutai, also the team captain, who favorably competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase boys, securing 5th in the finals, testifies to the importance of international meets for career development. “We are learning a lot from the system and dynamics of credible and healthy completions”.
