UNMA urges farmers to take advantage of current rains to prepare farmlands

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda National Meteorological Authority-UNMA has advised agriculturalists to use the current off seasonal rain patterns to prepare their farmlands.

This follows some occasional rains experienced in most parts of the country since January 14, 2022, after the dry season associated with the recent high temperatures. However, UNMA Executive Officer Dr David Elweru, says that the current rains are a result of the strengthening of Southern Pressure Systems whose orientation shifted the rainfall belt over the country consequently leading to the observed rainfall events.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, Dr Elweru explained that further outlook of the current rainfall is expected to gradually reduce over most parts of the country in about one week and later on dry conditions are expected to resume until the end of February. According to Dr Elweru, the overview of the current rains spanning the period of December, January and February is generally characterized by sunny, dry, hazy over most parts of the country.

Lillian Nkwenge, the Authority’s Principal Public Relations Officer says the farming community in the country can take advantage of the current rains to carry out land preparation in anticipation of the first seasonal rains between the months of March and May.

UNMA is a government-aided semi-autonomous agency mandated to offer weather and climate services to analyse scientific research findings and provide guidance on climate change.
