Village in Wakiso seeks NEMA help over rising heaps of garbage

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Katale Bugema village aka Lower Jomayi Estates in Wakiso District have protested increased garbage disposal in their area.

The residents of Katale Bugema village are facing a critical environmental and health issue due to the transformation of a local land area into a dumping site. Concerned about the impacts on their community, they’ve penned a letter to their Local Council Chairman, Hajji Muyingo Musa, urging him to engage the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for intervention.

The misuse of land, particularly near a swamp area, is causing significant distress among the villagers, as it not only poses health risks but also compromises the quality of their living environment.

By reaching out to their elected officials, the residents hope to catalyze a collective action to address and mitigate these threats promptly.

“This not only poses severe health risks but also degrades our living environment,” the residents said in a letter signed by a resident lawyer Kakooza Savio Ntensibe.

  1. Among the five principles that underly the effective and controlled management of waste
    Polluter pays:
    Precautionary: ( UNEP, 1972)- to avoid threats to environment
    Duty of care: – registration of handler
    Proximity:: risk in transport
    Prior informed consent:- by rcommunity serving as a destination

    The story and related pictures drag one back to the issues of national regulatory activities

    These would be expected to be well known by the local government and effective up to village level

    This group is lucky enough to have unified action , otherwise several dwellings choke on these problems depending on varied levels of awareness

    When will effective management of waste become a concern of the lowest level of administration?

    Why should a licenced waste management company inconvenience communities?

    Visit that dumping site, you may find “clinical waste”
