Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The lovers of the Christmas Cantata will this year do with an online performance thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Christmas Cantata has been a crowd puller to Watoto Church, formerly Kampala Pentecostal Church during Christmas holidays for the last 35 years.
It comprises high-energy music, creative dance, drama, and multi-media that bring to life the story depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. Families and people around the Kampala Metropolitan area flock to the building that used to host the famed Norman Cinema and has since been turned into God’s temple during Christmas for the thrilling performance.
However, Easter Nakalema, the Communication Officer at Watoto Church, says due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ban on social gatherings, the epic Christmas show will go be hosted virtually under the theme Prince of Peace. “We’re committed to celebrating Christ in all things and bringing Jesus’ hope and healing in the hardest of places and situations. And 2020, is no exception. So, we’re thrilled to announce that we will be showing Christmas Cantata, Prince of Peace during this Christmas season,’ she said.
Ordinarily, Watoto organizes three shows per day for four days. Because of free entrance, the show has been attracting thousands of people. Nakalema says this time the production will be broadcast right in the comfort of people living rooms. They have already shot show from the usual stage filled with exhilarating dance, drama, outstanding audiovisual effects and favourite Christmas songs – both old and new, with a cast of about 200 people.
“It will be streamed on different Watoto Church platforms online and selected televisions,” she adds. According to the plan, the show will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube channels from December 23 to 24 at 7:00 p.m. The show will also be streamed on the same channels on Christmas at 4:00 pm and later on, NBS TV on Sunday 27 at 9:30 am.
The founder of Watoto Church, Gary Skinner, notes that this year, more than ever, the world needs to hear about the miracle of the Christmas story and the hope that comes with the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. “That’s why we’re honoured to present this spectacular stage production with an incredible message of redemption, restoration and peace,” Skinner said in a written statement.
