Possible solution
In the wake of COVID-19, Kaheru says “Politicians (now) need to be creative too and figure out how to get profiled online, how to interact with citizens through newer ways such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter etc.”
According to him, election administration and management, as well as civic engagement in the 2021 election should be most likely to be virtual.
He said political consultation, candidate identification process and candidate nomination by EC among others will most likely be conducted online and that campaign rallies could be moved to media – with community radio stations offering the primary platform for engagement.
“However, with limited internet penetration, candidates need to leverage the 292 community radio stations spread around the country. Politicians can submit on radio and television programmes through their social media platforms, in order to maintain relevance and pick feedback from the public.”
He says candidates who have been disadvantaged must innovatively catch up through profiling themselves via social media platforms, utilising messaging via community radio stations as well as invest in branding and creative message dissemination.
