THIS WEEK: We can’t afford Independence Day celebrations, Kiir

July 09 is a memorable day for south Sudanese for it’s when Africa’s youngest nation marks its independence and therefore calls for celebration. But, this year nationals were treated to a statement by the president that the country couldn’t organize a ceremony because they had experienced a financial meltdown.

President Salva Kiir wrote that the government had to make this painful decision of cancelling the celebrations because they didn’t feel it was appropriate to spend whatever little funds they have to celebrate when the people are hugely affected by the economic crisis. The six year old country has spent most of its life in civil war which has worsened the economic situation as many have abandoned their businesses and investors abandoned the country.
