THIS WEEK: Judges to be given a target of cases to handle a year

Kampala, Uganda | THIS WEEK | During the Court Open Day held in Fort Portal on Aug.21, Chief Justice Bart Katureebe said judges are to be given a target of cases to handle in a specified period of time a move he says will help deal with the challenge of backlog.

He also said they have only a few judges to handle many cases which makes some cases to take up to three years to be disposed off.

Katureebe who announced that the says the country has only 50 high court judges added that a town like Fort Portal has only one judge yet the ideal would have been four.

A case census done last year revealed that more than 30,000 cases were in court awaiting hearing.
