THIS WEEK: Justice Owiny Dollo appointed new Deputy CJ

President Museveni has appointed Justice Alphonse Owiny – Dollo (Pictured) the new Deputy Chief Justice (CJ) as Stephen Kavuma’s term comes to an end. In a letter addressed to the speaker of parliament, the president indicated that he had also appointed Richard Butera and Paul Mugamba as Supreme Court judges.

As the deputy CJ, the justice will be the head of the court of appeal which doubles as the constitutional court. The court has been recently criticized following issuing of controversial interim orders by Justice Kavuma.

Justice Owiny-Dollo who caused excitement appointment as one who will return sanity to the court became popular when he was handling the 2010 Kyandondo terror attacks case where he convicted seven on charges of terrorism. The nominees now await vetting by parliament.
