THIS WEEK: MPs call for overhauling party leadership as Tanga Lumumba row deepens
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The move to cut staff at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has exposed and intensified the fights between Secretary General Kasule Lumumba and chairman of Electoral Commission Dr. Tanga Odoi with each accusing the other of mishandling the matter. This was after about 400 staff members were dismissed after the party failed to effectively facilitate them. Tanga for instance said that the Secretary General lacked administrative skills and that majority of the employees left at the secretariat were serving her and not the party. But, Kasule says Tanga has a personal grudge on her and that the problems at the secretariat are caused by the fact that the top leadership has failed to intervene as the lecturer mistreats her.
It’s upon this background that a section of members of parliament belonging to the party have called for an overhaul of the leadership if sanity is to return to the party. John Baptist Nambeshe who has been named an NRM rebel MP for going against the party decision to vote against removal of presidential age limits in the constitution said the problem at the secretariat is an inherited one which started with the unfortunate removal of former Secretary General Amama Mbabazi. This according to him didn’t solve the party’s problems but divided them and intensified bickering which can only be resolved by appointing new leaders.
What is the problem between the two, Lumumba and Tanga? Is it political struggle.or greed for resources? Or lack if leadership and managerial skills altogether by both parties? Sanity is needed at the helm of NRMO secretariat plus respect for team leaders.
