THIS WEEK: MPs visit sugar factory after Lugazi leaders’ petition

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Members of parliament attached to the Natural Resources Committee have visited Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) factory in Lugazi Municipality following a petition by local leaders that the area is suffering from foul smell after the factory failed to properly dispose off their waste. The committee headed by Isingiro South MP Alex Byarugaba had also received reports that the factory directly discharges water waste into the nearby streams without treating it.

However, the MPs were guided on a tour On Feb.13 by Mehta Group of Companies Regional Director Suresh Sharma to their treatment plant where he told them that it’s where the water is collected and treated before being released and that the allegations were unfounded. But, they conceded that some measures put in place by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) were not being followed.
