THIS WEEK: Parliament honors Heart institute surgeons
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Parliament has moved a resolution to honor surgeons from the Uganda Heart Institute who have successfully conducted two surgeries on patients suffering from Coronary artery heart disease. Dubbed, triple and double coronary bypass heart surgeries, the operations conducted by a team of 14 experts from the heart institute led by surgeons Dr. William Manyilirah and Tom Mwambu were the first of the kind in the country to be done by local doctors whereby patients who have previously required the treatment have had it done abroad.
In a resolution on Feb.15 , Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa asked that parliament makes an annual allocation of an equivalent of a sum of Shs10billion to the institute successively the next five years commencing from FY 2018/2019 to cater for the improvement of services at the institute.
Meanwhile, the Institute has registered a growing trend in heart operations whereby this year they are planning to carry out 650 operations of which 400 of these are catheterization procedures, 100 open heart surgeries and 150 closed and other surgeries like the bypass procedures.
This is a highly commendable job done by the UHI surgeons. It is great to hear that Government is up to support the medical doctors and the Heart Institute interms of remuneration but also equipment to save thousands of Ugandans unable to afford expensive heart operations abroad. Thumbs up for Parliament.
