THIS WEEK: Pro-age limit MPs declared ‘historicals’

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement (NRM) held a fete in Kiboga district on Feb.25 to thank the 317 MPs who at the end of last year voted in favor of removing presidential age limits from the constitution. While at the event, President Museveni declared the MPs historicals for what he called a fundamental decision that they made. Also at the event, Ruth Nankabirwa the Government Chief Whip spoke of a plan to embark on nationwide campaign to popularize a move to extend the presidential term of office from the current five to seven years.

After a number of scuffles that led to some MPs opposing constitutional amendments being clobbered, in December 2017, the amendments were done amidst controversy. Then, President Museveni’s only hurdle for not standing for presidency in 2021 was removed in addition to extending the term of office for MPs to seven. The presidential term was left at five but added a clause for this to change through a referendum. Nankabirwa says what’s in plan for the party now is consult the electorate regarding the referendum which will be organized by the Electoral Commission.

Already, cabinet has approved the move to go into a referendum.
