THIS WEEK: US, AU pile pressure on South Sudan leaders
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The African Union has joined the United States in considering sanctions against those blocking peace in South Sudan. African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat said that “the time has come” for sanctions as a way of ending war in the central African country. Mahamat made the announcement at the opening of the 30th annual African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
His comments rhyme with those of the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who has repeatedly spoken out against South Sudan president Salva Kiir. Haley told the UN Security Council that Kiir’s government was “increasingly proving itself to be an unfit partner” in efforts to restore peace. Haley visited South Sudan in October last year where she strongly criticized Kiir.
South Sudan has been at war since December 2013 when forces loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar and those of Kiir.
