Former Mbarara Municipality MP and wife to former opposition leader Col. Rtd Kizza Besigye, Engineer Winnie Byanyima, has been appointed Executive Director of Oxfam International.
According to the Oxfam site, the former legislature was appointed after a long global search and chose Byanyima who was described as a grass-roots activist.
“Ms. Byanyima was selected after a global search, led by the Chair of Oxfam International, Keith Johnston, with the help of an international executive search firm human rights advocate, senior international public servant, and world recognized expert on women’s rights, has been appointed Executive Director of Oxfam International” said the information on the site posted on 15th January.
The joyful Byanyima expressed happiness and posted on her twitter account thanking Oxfam.
“Thank you. I’m honored & proud 2 be invited 2 lead Oxfam. Excited 2 join Oxfam family of passionate, smart social justice warriors” she said.

Byanyima will lead Oxfam International, which offers strategic guidance, support, expertise and coordination across Oxfam. The organisation works with people in 94 countries to find effective ways to end the injustice of poverty.
Through its 17 affiliates, Oxfam provides humanitarian relief in crises, empowers poor and marginalized people to gain social and economic equality, and campaigns for a more just world.
Keith Johnston said within the outstanding field of candidates, Winnie stood out as exemplifying Oxfam’s values and ambitions.
“She brings clear vision fired by her commitment to social justice, the toughness of an able negotiator and campaigner, and leadership based on her capacity to inspire and convene, in many circles, cultures and levels.” He added.
